Tonatiuh Vázquez, educador, arreglista, compositor y productor mexicano. En 2011, concluye la licenciatura en Jazz y Música Afrocaribeña en el Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico (Magna Cum Laude). En 2015, termina la maestría en Composición y Arreglo de Jazz en William Paterson University of New Jersey, bajo la tutela de Pete McGuinness y Jim McNeely, recibió el premio de su generación “Music Scholar Graduate Award 2014 - 2015". Desde el 2016, es profesor de tiempo completo en el Centro de Estudios de Jazz de la Universidad Veracruzana.  Es co-autor de la suite "La Mexicana" grabada por La Orquesta Nacional de Jazz y el arpista Cesar Secundino (2019). Cuenta con tres albums Nin Yolkokol (2012), The Jazz Orchestra (2019) y The Saxophone Quintet (2020) también tiene dos libros: Manual de Armonía Moderna (2015) y Escala Pentatónica (2017). Desde el 2015, lidera su propia big band: “Tonatiuh Vázquez Jazz Orchestra”. 

 

Ha impartido clínicas en diferentes universidades nacionales e internacionales como la University of Northern Colorado (2019) y University of Texas (2022) en el Symposium Internacional de Arreglistas y Compositores de Jazz (ISJAC) donde presento su obra “Ayotzinapa” y “Suite la Mexicana” respectivamente. También se presentó en renombrado club de jazz “Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola” en Nueva York con WPUNJ Jazz Orchestra (2015). 

 

Entre sus trabajos comisionados se encuentran: la partitura para el cortometraje “Preludio”, por Gran Angular con la participación del actor Damián Alcázar. Ha sido becario del FONCA (Jóvenes Creadores 2017-2018) y Programa Fomento a Proyectos Conversiones Culturales (2019). También ganó el concurso Jóvenes Compositores (2017) de la OSX (Orquesta Sinfónica de Xalapa)  con su composición Tlaital Toteutsi y el 3er lugar del 1er Concurso de Composición Mario Ruiz Armengol (2021) con la obra Contingencia Mexicana para Oboe y Ensamble de Cámara. 

 

Miembro de la SACM (Sociedad de Autores y Compositores de México), ISJAC (International Society of Jazz Arrangers and Composers), Recording Academy (GRAMMY’s). 

Tonatiuh Vázquez is a Mexican educator, arranger, composer, and producer. In 2011, he completed his degree in Jazz and Afro-Caribbean Music at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico (Magna Cum Laude). In 2015, he finished his Master's in Jazz Composition and Arranging at William Paterson University of New Jersey, under the guidance of Pete McGuinness and Jim McNeely. He received the “Music Scholar Graduate Award 2014-2015” for his generation. Since 2016, he has been a full-time professor at the Jazz Studies Department of the Universidad Veracruzana. He is the co-author of the suite "La Mexicana," recorded by the National Jazz Orchestra and harpist Cesar Secundino (2019). He has three albums: Nin Yolkokol (2012), The Jazz Orchestra (2019), and The Saxophone Quintet (2020). He also has two books: Manual de Armonía Moderna (2015) and Escala Pentatónica (2017). Since 2015, he has led his own big band: Tonatiuh Vázquez Jazz Orchestra.

He has given masterclasses at various national and international universities, such as the University of Northern Colorado (2019) and the University of Texas (2022) at the International Symposium of Jazz Arrangers and Composers (ISJAC), where he presented his works "Ayotzinapa" and "Suite la Mexicana," respectively. He also performed at the renowned jazz club Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in New York with the WPUNJ Jazz Orchestra (2015).

Among his commissioned works are the score for the short film "Preludio," by Gran Angular, with the participation of actor Damián Alcázar. He has been a fellow of FONCA (Young Creators Program 2017-2018) and the Cultural Projects Promotion Program (2019). He also won the Young Composers Contest (2017) from the OSX (Xalapa Symphony Orchestra) with his composition Tlaital Toteutsi and placed 3rd in the 1st Mario Ruiz Armengol Composition Contest (2021) with the work Contingencia Mexicana for oboe and chamber ensemble.
